Substitute Procedures:

PHYSICAL SCIENCE

1. Unplanned Absence
In the event of an unplanned absence, a 1-day “Bouncing Ball” labette and a 1-4 day emergency “Radical Science” lesson plan are available. The Bouncing Ball instructions, handout masters, and the necessary materials are in a plastic shoebox on the shelf at the back of Room 10.The “Radical Science” lesson is in a folder in or on the plastic crate on top of the file cabinet. The DVD for that lesson is in a blue-spine plastic binder, also in the plastic crate. The DVD can be played using the laptop connected to the projector at the front of the room. Either lesson can be used if I was not able to prepare material to continue the current classroom lesson. However, most material for a given week (including a calendar) is posted on this website under Lesson Plans, so it would be possible to reconstruct those lessons in lieu of the emergency lesson.

2. Pre-arranged Absence
Lesson plans for pre-arranged absences will be on my desk and all materials will be on the desk or laid out on the front and side tables. Also, the projector and a laptop computer will be available and accompanied by separate instructions.

3. Long Term Absence
In the event of a long-term absence, rough plans for the current year are available on this site under the Lesson Plans link. Detailed lesson plans and materials from the previous year are available in the blue and pink notebooks on top of the file cabinet next to my desk. Lecture notes are in the pink folders and master copies of all handouts (including labs and worksheets) are in the blue folders. DVDs and CDs with appropriate material are in the binder with the dark blue spine. Materials for all of the labs are in labeled containers on the shelves or in the locked cabinets. Keys are in my desk drawer.

PHYSICS

1. Unplanned Absence
No emergency lessons have been constructed yet. Students are usually given problem sets that require work throughout the week, and can always use class time to work on those individually or in groups. Students may also find it useful to self-select additional problems from the current chapter for in-class work.

2. Pre-arranged Absence
As above. Apart from lab equipment, material will again be laid out in Rm 10. Lab equipment will be set up in Rm 12.

3. Long Term Absence
Again, rough plans are available at the Lesson Plans link, and more detailed material can be found in the red “Physics” binder. Note that there is no historical archive for 2012-13, since this is the first year for the course for me. However, the course strictly follows the syllabus for the U Akron - Wayne College course “Physics for the Life Sciences”. Although I don’t use them, lectures in power point and other support materials can be made available either by me or by Dr. Tim Vierheller at UA/Wayne.
